Friday

Posted by Hayes on 2007-02-11

On friday I was able to leave work a couple hours early as we are a little slow right now so I figured I would give Danger a call as I haven't talked to him for a few months. After talking to him for a couple of minutes I found out he had tried calling me 10 min. earlier to see if I could ride in a flowshow that night cause Bakers Volvo engine shat the bucket in Merritt and they needed a third person for the show. The trouble was he had my old phone number and couldn't get ahold of me but I randomly called him, so I had no plans and figured what the hell, Flow-time. Danger figured the show was at 8pm so I was to head down at 7pm. Martine and I we were on the bus heading to the sea bus Dan called and told me he found out the show was at 9:15-9:45, cool, the best part about doing the shows is sitting there waiting to ride. Upon arriving at Canada Place I was informed the show was for adults, Wells Fargo's top 800 mortgage brokers in the US of A. They were all flown up here for a weekend of appreciation with their significant other and we were one of the shows to entertain them in between the drinking and dancing. The show set up was cool consisting of a couple skinny lines, step down and one jump but the coolest thing was that it was all on carpet(softer than concrete). The show was going pretty good so in the last 10 min. I had an idea, but I had to move the tranny and kicker as it was pretty close to the crowd and I didn't want to risk hitting one of them if it didn't go as planned, also opened the doors into the hallway so I could get a little more run in space but didn't tell anyone what the plan was. I was getting a little nervous but after doing a couple run in dead sailors to gauge speed, I committed in my head feeling it, hands off the brakes and start pedaling, 1/2 way though rotation I thought "crap" but then at 3/4 it changed to "looks good" and when both wheels touched "F YA". After the crowd quieted down I grabbed the mic and explained to the crowd that it has been 5 months since I had done a backflip because the last 2 had ended in injury, a good crowd works wonders with your confidence. Mighty Mike and Darhma hit the step down again and in my head I could hear myself say "anyone can do anything once, twice means it not just luck". With that thought I had to do it again even though I was happy with one success. Turns out the second was even smoother, cool shows over, time for a beer or 2.

How to Move a Rock.... Digger Style !

This pesky 500 lb rock was in the way of our stepdown, berm to berm so it had to go. Only 1 person I know who could do the job. Even the Godfather helped out. Digger rocks and no trees were harmed in the process.

good fun

Snow falling on Seymour

Posted by Newman on 2007-02-03

Whistler Lately I have been making the journey from my new place in Langley to Seymour mountain to get a little snow on the tires. I really needed to get out and go for a ride after the horrific weather that we've been getting here in the Lower Mainland and I was rewarded for making the drive North two weeks in a row now! My ride last weekend was good but this week it was so much better despite the weather taking a turn for the worst. Mother Nature decided to give us the full spectrum of riding conditions, dry wet and then super slick. The first run of the day got me thinking that the beginning of spring must be a lot closer than the groundhog says. The trails were almost to the point of dust dry in some sections and were as fast as lightning. I was thinking that it was time to get the shaded goggles out and ditch the rain jacket when the clouds moved in from the sidelines and reminded me that it is still the winter and I do live on the Wet west coast. We finished off the first lap with dry(ish) tires and were ready to go for a second quick lap before it was lunch. The parking lots on the mountains are sometimes empty and boring and other times they seem like a reunion hall of sorts. The last few days that I have been to seymour mountain the parking lots have been full of many old friends from near and far. Today the theme of the reunion parking lot was continued when I met up with people that I have not seen in years and others that I met while overseas in Germany who happened to be in Vancouver. All of the social time in the parking lot got in the way of a speedy vehicle recovery for the second shuttle. By the time the second lap was in progress the clouds had decided to dump on us. The sudden precipitation seemed to drop the temperature by a few degrees and before we knew it we were riding up the hill (in a truck of course) while dodging snowflakes. The second lap, although cold and wet, was anything but miserable. It was the best time I have spent on my bike so far this year. I don't know if it was the company or the race for dry clothes and coffee at the bottom of the hill but something made me ride faster and have more fun than I did on the first lap. The snow made for a great change of terrain and it was so dark it felt like riding in the winter is supposed to feel like. I had nothing left for a third lap, mostly because I'm a wimp, so I dragged myself over to the Lazy Bay Cafe for something warm to drink. If you get a chance this week, your homework is to go ride a little Seymour mountain (through rain, snow, sleet or hail) I guarantee you'll have fun!

Washington

Because winter decided to stay with us here in Vernon and my bike craving was getting to a new high I decided I had to go South for some riding. It was awesome. I went to Walla Walla Washington to ride and and get away from the snow. I went there for about a week and rode everyday. I really didn't want to leave. So I left Vernon Wednesday after work and after stoping off and seeing Scott at Redbull I was off with 3 cases of Bull and the excitment of a 6 year old on Christmas eve! So after driving through the night for 8 hours I was finally there and was on the bike right away. I spent alot of time in there skate park which wasn't anything super awesome but was perfect to start getting the flow back. Over the next couple of days I continued to ride skate park and there wicked BMX track. I was even able to get Sarah out riding the track on my last day there! She pretty much ruled! Then I was able to start riding some dirt jumps and thats when the fun really started. It took acouple of jumps to warm up to them but in just acouple of minutes out came the tricks and abunch of good times. I spent most of my time on the sx trail which really proved itself worthy of all sorts of riding areas. Its such a wicked bike. I was able to learn some tricks but most of all I was able to really work on my style of riding which I think got much smoother over the short period of riding. My Washington trip was over all a super good time and I haven't enjoyed myself that much in a long time. Its funny how riding just gives me that warm feeling inside. Giddy Up! I would just like to thank Scott Jewett and Redbull and of course all our sponsors for there awesome support. Thanks guys! Anyway now im really looking forward to the Bike Expo in Vancouver and to see all the cool new stuff and all the people. Taker Easy
