Week FiveWinner
Stephen Wilde's choices...
Powered by:
Kokanee Crankworx @ Whistler

March Prizing brought to you by Helly Hansen

Stephen Wilde has a gritty style that's all his own.  His photos bring you along for the ride and let you taste the soil and smell the cedar.  Looking at his photos I often have no idea how he gets his results but I'm always drawn to his images.  As with our other judges we're chuffed that he found time in his busy schedule to judge Money Shot for week five - the first week sponsored by Mace Gear. Don't forget that all of this is leading up to our grand prize package including accommodation, lift tickets, priority press passes and bike rentals at Crankworx 07 in Whistler.

Treats from Mace: A Volition Jersey and a pair of Shackle Gloves

Here's the week fivers.

The picking was hard. There were at least ten shots - all at a similar calibre - that held my attention. It was hard to make the final selection!

Jimbo shot by Tyler Mitchell
Composition is nice. Good contrast. This shot was hard to pull off with all the branches to distract the viewer!

I liked this shot in black and white a lot. There's a ton going on with the trees and rider. B&W works well since the rider is wearing white, the rider pops - thanks to some fill - a bit much, but my eye always comes back to the rider. Fuf is (tired of seeing this trick!) good. Timing maybe slightly late, but good. There were action shots i liked more than this pic, but since it's a photo contest - this was my favorite for photo skill combined with a bicycle. Good job!

First place for week five. Rider ~ Jimbo.  Photo ~ Tyler Mitchell    Click image to see original file.

Good timing! There were a lot of strong shots this week, but it seemed the timing was just slightly off on many of them. The timing is perfect on this shot. The exposure is also good. I don't love straight up action shots, but this shot has great composition. I like the few little dots of dirt - the shadow - and there's a hint of a landing! Nice sky.

Second place. Rider ~ Bruno Penone.  Photo ~ Damien Rosso.  Click image to view original.

I'm a huge fan of seeing all sides to bicycle riding - the grunt up as well as the action! This shot has a lot of of emotion - but is lacking contrast. I love the detail of the rope, the busted logs as a crossing, the forest debris, but mostly i like the grittiness of it.

Third place. Rider ~ Jon Mepham.  Photo ~ Euan Forrester.    Click image see original.

Great action shot. As i mentioned, there were many good action shots this week - so it was hard to choose! I'd like to see a tiny bit more motion in the action and either tighter framing or else pull back to see more of where the rider is heading. The mottled bright sky on top left keeps distracting me.

Honourable Mention 1.  Rider ~ Barb Haley.  Photo ~ Smoke    Click image to see larger, uncropped version.

This shot would've scored higher. I like it! Except for that red bike!!

Honourable Mention 2.  Rider ~ Pat Costella.  Photo ~ Paul Miska    Click image to see larger file.

Week six is now cranking.  Click here to see the entries.   This week's winner will receive a Volition Jersey and a pair of Shackle Gloves from Mace.
