North Legion’s backcountry challenge
Last year’s revolutionary new winter sport device from North Legion has now been taken to its ultimate test, the backcountry challenge. The SMX from North Legion has proven its ability on groomed slopes and fun parks, but due to pressure from amongst others Darren Berrecloth, who announced in an interview during the 06 adidas winter slopestyle that he wanted to take the SMX to the back country, North Legion were forced to rush development of fat skis for the SMX.
When the top mountain bikers in the world want to ride the SMX on the big mountain you don’t sit around waiting….you make things happen, and that’s what North Legion did. So a few months later North Legion had their first prototype fat skis made up and were ready to put them into action. A handful of NoL’s test pilots were flown in and a Camera crew was summoned to document the action. The crew had a ball and really pushed the envelope for SMX riding. They were going bigger, more stylish and doing more technical tricks than anyone had seen before. They did also put the new SMX rig to its test by negotiating steep sections which are usually only ridden by experienced big mountain skiers. This winter the pressure is back on Darren - and we sure look forward to seeing him rip apart the Canadian backcountry on his SMX.
