Cam
McCaul take District Ride Germany |
Nuremberg August 5th 2006 – The freeride scene laid seige to Albrecht Duerer this past weekend as 21 of the world’s best riders from 8 different countries came to Nuremberg for the 2nd Red Bull District Ride of the year.

With a stunning backdrop and a course that was bigger and better than last year 45,000 spectators saw Cam McCaul take his first major Slopestyle victory. Paul Basagoitia placed second and achieved the highest overall score after winning the District Ride in Catania. He is now the proud owner of a pimped FORD pick up truck. Darren Berrecloth placed third with a great performance.

Riders rode two runs in the final through six 'districts' - essentially areas
with a concentration of features for the riders to challenge. In the first district,
the drop district, the riders had to choose between the castle wall drop and
a smaller drop which lead into the Marzocchi quarter pipe. In the second district
– the downtown district – there was a mandatory drop over a rail
followed by two box jumps. Next was the Wing District - a combination of two
mini ramps allowing riders to throw 360s, backflips Supermans and more. The
street district was home to Oakley’s Sick O Award on Friday evening -
an ideal showcasee for the most progressive urban riders. The 5th district was
the Step up’n’ Down District near the town hall where riders rolled
a curved wallride into the big BRAUN box and then the catwalk to take a short
breather before the final district. The Dirt District iced the cake and riders
finished with their best moves. The stoked crowd pushed the riders to give their
maximum
Every member of the crowd, young and old, seemed to be screaming at the top
of their lungs.
After the qualifying runs on Friday and Saturday the riders had to run in the opposite order of their qualifying result. Battling it out in the final were Kyle Strait, Adam Hauck, Lance McDermott, Paul Basagoitia, Darren Berrecloth, Gee Atherton, Timo Pritzel, Amir Kabbani and Cameron McCaul. They were slugging it out for 20,000 Euros and the special pimped FORD truck.

It began to rain just before the first run of the final and the crowds were given a lesson in patience. The rain stopped after 15minutes and the riders had a meeting with the head judge Paul Rak. They decided to run the first final without the drop district since the landing was too wet and dangerous. It rained again after the first run and the judges decided it would be a one run final.
Kyle Strait rode first. His bike didn't show up in time so he was only able to ride the second qualifier - squeaking through with a 10th place finish. He had an amazing run and finished up with a double tailwhip earning him fourth place.

Darren Berrecloth impressed the crow both days. He stepped it up in his final
run throwing down the sickest line of the day in the dirt district with an indian-air-seatgrab,
a huge 360 table top and a tailwhip. Those tricks boosted him up to the podium
and third place.
Paul Basagoitia won in Sicily and it was clear he had his eye on the Ford and
the overall title. He started off with a flip over the downtown stair drop.
In the Wings District he did an x-up into the first mini and a 360 out off the
Wings District, then another flip over the street box and a couple more good
moves in the street zone. At the BRAUN box he jumped 360 off it and went up
the catwalk to chill for a second and prepare for the dirts with tons of spectators
firing him up for his final jumps. He finished with an x-up, a three and a tailwhip.
Yihaah! Was that enough for the truck?

Mr. Cam McCaul was the last contender to roll out. He pulled a barrel roll over the first downtown stair drop, then a bar spin at the first box and a no-footed can off the second box. In the wings he pulled another barspin and also a 360. He continued again with a barrel roll at the box into the street district and a 360 over the street spine. He came out of the curved wallride and jumped up a barspin onto the BRAUN box and a 360 off. With just the Dirt District to go things were looking good. The crowd was pumped and Cam was going off. His final trifecta was a Superman Seatgrab Indian Air, a No-foot Can and then a tailwhip. After the number crunching the judges agreed; McCam was the man and first place along with 6500 Euros were his.
There were other riders killing it as well, but many ended their runs with
a bit of bad luck. Timo Pritzel had an awesome run with a huge backflip onto
the BRAUN box, but he crashed at the end on the last dirt jump and had to settle
for seventh.
Andreu Lacondeguy had similar issues. He rode really well, had more tricks than
most riders, but he didn’t finish the course just like Timo and placed
fifth.

Absolutely stoked by his results McCaul stated shortly after the awards ceremony:
“It was a great contest. I could not have ridden any better! I nailed
everything what I planned for the final run. After Catania it was another absolutely
fantastic weekend. Tonight it will be a great party for sure!”
Another rider had just as many reasons to smile. Shortly after the awards ceremony
the overall winner of Catania and Nuremberg was announced and the keys were
tossed to Paul Basagoitia. It won’t take long and the FORD pick up truck
will be cruising through the streets of Minden, Nevada. “I can hardly
believe it. I am absolutely stoked! The truck is killing it! I didn’t
dare to even think about winning the car before the contest.”
