Mountain
biking is not a crime dot com |
Mountain bikers are banding together in a grassroots network, voicing their
frustration over the park access restrictions set by the Capital Regional District
(CRD) against mountain bikes. We know other areas across the province have similar
issues with land managers and owners, and this movement serves as their voice
too, fittingly in the capital city of British Columbia.
A fresh new approach is being discussed, and for that, a fresh new website was
needed to get the word out and to help unite trail cyclists. mountainbikingisnotacrime.com
is presently live and being developed to spread the word and to share ideas
and tactics in order to aid in accessing more trails in parks and crown land.
All ideas and stories are welcome from all around the island, province, and
continent.
mtbisnotacrime is not an organization but a grassroots movement of concerned
riders who see the pressures of development, politics and population growth
squeezing their access to trails and green-spaces. They believe in equal access
for trail riding through the incorporation of smart management, cooperative
relationships with mtb clubs, and transparency of decision making for public
green-spaces. They point to organized clubs and societies as the ones to deal
with in developing plans to enhance mtb access and implement stewardship relationships
for the betterment of public green-spaces.
It looks like this site may have some tell tale signs of growing into a large
collaboration very quickly.
Get away from your monitor and into the local bike shops you will start seeing
donation jars displaying the mission. ALL proceeds collected will go to directly
fund this effort. Please help fund the stickers and posters and help get the
word out!
There will be an awareness activist ride on Sunday August 27th. Remember the
Critical Mass rides of years gone by, or the Wednesday night urbans just a couple
years back? Maybe this will feed off of those energies. Maybe it will become
a provincial monthly ride. Who knows? It has to start somewhere right? Only
you as riders will decide. The idea is for other communities to do the same
thing on the same dates.
Wear green on Sunday August 27th when you show up at the location that will
be announced on mountainbikingisnotacrime.com
They are your trails people, on public land which you pay taxes to support.
Start demanding access to them! Keep an eye on the website for more information
and details.
Want to join us and "Ride for Trails"? Want to know more about the
ride? It is quite simply a group of locals who are trying to make a point. We
want to get the word out to those in power that we want legal, sustainable,
safe and equal access to land to build trails on and to develop more quality
places to ride! It doesn't matter if you are from Victoria, Up Island, Vancouver,
the US anywhere - everyone is welcome.
Join us on the “Ride For Trails” Sunday August 27th at 12:00 noon
on the Galloping Goose on the Esquimalt side of the Johnson Street Bridge in
downtown Victoria!Be there, wear Green and show your support for local trail
access in Victoria or in your area. Want to help spread the word, download a
copy of our flyer and pass it around, post it in your store, car, on your bike
