Is it live or is it photoshop?

It seems that some of the DH talent on the Kona Clarks Les Gets Factory team has thrown down a challenge to the Kona Clump team. Fabien Barel has successfully jumped his Dawg Primo out of a helicopter on the Reunion Islands. I don’t have an exact height of the jump, but I’m guessing it was ‘really high’. I have an email into Fabien to get his estimate and will let you know when I get an answer. Fabien’s report follows. Michael Geraci

FROM FABIEN:
Reunion Island is a paradise in the Pacific ocean. It’s essentially on a volcano called the “Piton de la Fournaise”.  The idea of this trip was to do some heli VTT (VTT is French for MTB) instead of heliskiing. Our plan was to ride all the best places on the island where no one else has ridden - or even walked! We rode the Piton des Neiges (3300 meters altitude), the Trou de Fer (center of an old Volcano with waterfalls all around), and the centre of the Volcano call the Piton de la Fournaise. Each place was amazing, different and beautiful.

The main idea of this project was to be the first person in the World to jump from a helicopter with a bicycle. The helicopter was pretty small and the bike could not fit inside unless it was dissassembled. So we had to land on the Volcano, build the bike and take off with the bike outside of the Helicopter.  It hovered over the top of the Volcano and I had to hang on outside with all the rotor wash that the machine was making.

After a little sign from Manu (Molle), the photographer, I just closed my eyes during few second and weirdly, it sounded really quiet. I just pushed really hard on my leg to try to get out of the heli’s air pressure as fast as I could.

It was really fun and so much adrenaline. I now understood what my team mates from the Kona Clump refer to as the Kona Groove!

I would like to thank Kona, Clark’s, Les Gets, 661 and all the sponsor of our team, who helped me out on this project
