Money Shot 2008 launches Friday morning. We aren't ready to announce
the first weekly judge but we'll let you know that shortly.
nsmb Money Shot 2008 Rules
How long is the contest?
The preliminary rounds for Money Shot 2008 will go for 8 weeks -
ending on April 25 th. There will be two rounds of four weeks each.
There will be a weekly winner each week and then at the end of that round
the judges who presided over that month, along with a fifth judge
to break any ties, will choose the monthly finalists. Two finalists
will be chosen for each month. At
that point we will have four monthly winners but there will actually be
five finalists. The
fifth finalist will be a wildcard. Together
with the pro judges we'll choose one entrant who we feel is worthy of the
finals. It may be that that shooter didn't manage to win a week and
it may be that they won at least one week. The wildcard will
be chosen based on the strength of any entries made rather than just
one photo.
The five finalists will then be asked to submit five more photos each and they
will be judged on the strenght of their portfolio. The question the judges
will ask will be 'who would you hire based on these portfolios?'
Who can enter?
This is an international contest. We encourage photographers from all
over the world to enter. Last year we had stunning images from every
corner of the globe. This is not a pro contest. If
you have sold more than four campaigns to print publications you are not
considered an amateur in the eyes of Money Shot. Each campaign
can have multiple images but if for example you sold a photo used for
an ad and another used in a story in the same magazine that would count
as two campaigns.
One story with 5 images counts as one campaign. If your main source
of income is photography this is another disqualifying factor. If your
main source of income is photography but you haven't sold four campaigns YOU
ARE NOT ELIGIBLE. If your main source of income isn't photography
but you have sold more than four campaigns YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE.
If you've sold the odd shot but something else brings home your bacon you're
in. If you aspire to be a pro but you are just getting started then
giddy up - this could be your start. Primarily though we're looking
for shots from Joe Shooter - a rider who also likes to take pictures of
his or her riding crowd. This is a world wide contest - no matter
where you live we hope to see your shots in vying to be the Money Shot. The
only proviso here is that you must be able to get yourself to Crankworx. Air
fare is not included in this contest. If you are unable to attend
the prize will go to the next highest finisher. The grand prize is
not transferable.

What about the photo itself?
The photo itself shouldn't be watermarked. Once entered into our gallery the
shot will be nsmb watermarked on the bottom left corner. The rights
to the photo can't belong to someone else. You can shoot digital or
film and you can do some post processing using Photoshop or any other program
- which includes assembling a sequence. Be aware of the judges though.
Pro shooters tend to be purists and since they are the judges you might be
advised to get more jiggy with your camera than with your mouse. You can shoot
anything that has a mountain bike theme. It doesn't have to be a rider
going off a jump but it could be. You could shoot street, night riding,
slate park, bike park, an epic, stunts, post ride beers, dirt jumps or a section
of trail without a rider. Stretch yourself - creativity and originality
will be rewarded. I'm not going to say anything else about judging criteria.
We're just going to ask the lads to choose the shot they appreciate most.
Photos that have appeared in any print publication are not eligible.
This is a contest for shooters not riders so the prize goes to the person
behind the camera. Since I mentioned it on the front page I should say
that tasteful flesh will be welcomed in the contest. If you aren't sure
if the shot you took of your wife or girlfriend is within the rules please
feel free to send it to me for guidance.
The shot doesn't have to be new or recent to enter but that is likely to
help you in the eyes of the judges.
To claim your prize we'll ask you for the
original large file version of your winning shot as well as non-exclusive
usage rights both on the site and in print. This year we will
be sticking to this rule. We
have no plans for a book or a calendar but we would like the option
to provide the images as a desktop background for our users. We
always credit photographer and rider whenever we use a photo in any
way.
More info is better.
We'd love to hear how you shot your shot, anything interesting about
how the image came to be as well as any info from the eyeball side of the
camera. Tell us what equipement you use, any lighting equipment etc.
More is better in terms of info and complete rider and location info is required.

Last year the rules were highly controversial and they evolved over the first
few weeks of the contest, largely due to feedback from readers like you.
In the end the contest went really well with the rules established after all
of the public hearings. They have changed slightly but based on the
success 2006 we are pretty sure we have it dialled. Still we're open
to suggestions. We'd
like to hear what you have to say here.
