2012 FVMBA Spring Race Series: Are You Ready to Hammer?
The days are warming up and the snow has begun to melt. The drainage has been dug and the smell of fresh cedar is in the air. Get your legs warmed up, because it’s time for the FVMBA All Mountain Spring Series.
All Mountain is what riding in the Fraser Valley is all about. It’s about getting out and rippin' it on the 4” – 6” travel bike. It doesn’t matter if that bike is a 26” or 29er. It doesn’t matter if that bike is leaning to the XC or DH side of things. It’s about being on a bike that’s going to allow you to climb, to descend, to fight it out with your buddies, pushing each other’s limits no matter which way the trail is pointing. It’s a style of riding that’s going to let you get out and have fun!
To me, the FVMBA’s All Mountain Spring Series really represents riding in the Fraser Valley. I choose trails and venues that are both demanding and appealing to a broad range of riders and their skill sets. There are two XC races, but this is definitely not a series for the run of the mill XC racer. And there are two Super D’s and AM race, but this isn’t for the big bike racer either. It’s a series for the guys and gals that know how to handle themselves on all types of terrain and any given mountain. You’re going to need legs and fitness for a bit of climbing but you'd better have the skills for when the trails start to point down if you want to see the podium.
But most importantly, the reason I choose to have a race series on this network of trails is because they are the trails that the FVMBA has been building and maintaining for almost ten years now. Through FVMBA’s hard work and partnership with government and various land managers, the Fraser Valley now has legalized trails on Sumas and is in the process of legalizing the trails on two other mountains.
This race series showcases the work FVMBA has been doing, to expose riders to trails they may have never ridden before, and to give back to the riders that have supported us through their membership in our organization.
In order to continue supporting our local builders and give some love back to the trails, we are charging $10 per race. However, a deeply discounted pre-registration package – 5 races for $30 – is available at ccnbikes.com. Pre-reg is open until February 19th.
Previews of All 5 Courses
Feb 26th - Race #1 Heritage Park XC, Mission - Mass Start
Heritage Park was chosen first and foremost because of the abundance of technical single track in the area. Apart from a short gravel pathway that will be used to separate the racers, this 12 km race course is pretty much made up entirely of single track. It’s a figure eight loop that uses a portion of the same climb for both laps but different descents will bring you back to the start/finish area. The trails are continuously moving, up and down. Twisting and turning. Technical bike handling will be a strong asset for this race.

Off the line at last year's season kickoff Heritage Park XC. This winding course has more elevation gain than you might anticipate. Times between 45 and 90 minutes. Pre-register by Feb 19 and get 5 races for the price of three! Photo ~ Matt Scott
March 4th – Race #2 Bear Super D, Mission - 1 Minute Interval Starts
The Bear DH has been known over the past 16 years as the Fraser Valley’s premier DH race. The course is well established and respected amongst the local riders. With the proper big bike set up, guys can rip the DH course in less than 5 min. I wanted to build on that and add something that would challenge and appeal to the rider on a bike with a little less travel. We’ve incorporated another gravity trail, Sorcerer’s Apprentice, to link up to the DH course. Sorcerer’s Apprentice has a steep run in at the top, taking you down through some loamy high canopy forest. Mid course has a pedally traverse that connects the two trails. Do you choose a big bike, small bike or 29er? A small bike is going to have a huge disadvantage over the big bike on the DH course. But will the guy on the big bike be able to have the fitness to pedal the traverse? This is still going to be a gravity course. A rider should know his strengths and use them to his advantage. Winning times last year were in the 9 minute range.

Hardtails are fast at Heritage Park. Jean-Ann Berkenpas was fast all season last year. You don't have to be Jean-Ann to win, though – the series sponsors have provided lots of draw prizes. Photo ~ Mike Siemens
March 18th – Race #3 Vedder Super D, Chilliwack – 1 Minute Interval Starts
Vedder Mountain has a lot of trails that suit the bigger bikes. With its steeps and some occasional gap jumps, it was a natural fit for a Super D. We listened to rider feedback from last year and have removed the 1.5k traverse off the start. If the weather cooperates and the snow line keeps receding, we will be starting higher up the mountain at The Den. But if things don’t work out weather-wise, we will still be using the original singletrack course from last year: 2 Cents to Skidder and finishing off of Dilemma. This race will be one for the big bike rider to take some points in the Overall Series.

2 Cents on a recon run prior to last year's race. This Super D won't have a lot of pedaling; in terms of average speed, the fastest course by far. Photo ~ Morgan Taylor
April 1st – Race #4 Red Mountain XC, Mission – Mass Start
I wanted to keep this race a little different from format used with the Red Mountain XC Challenge that’s held in conjunction with the Bear Mountain DH race. Red Mountain has so many good trails. If I could have all of them in this race if I would. But I can’t, so I choose the ones that really are on the top of my list. Using the traditional start, the race heads up a fire road and around to the back side where it enters the Valley View trail. If you have time to lookie-loo you can see Stave Falls and Hayward Lake from here. Riders will then make their way back around to the front side of Red where they enter Crazy 8’s. This trail is old school technical. So much so that a skilled rider will definitely pull back any time they lost on the climb to the XC racer boy. After exiting Crazy 8’s, a quick loop brings you back to the where it’s all downhill to the finish.

This flowy traverse on Red reminds me of a longer version of Mel's on Burnaby. Super fun to roll along on. Photo ~ Morgan Taylor.
April 15th – Race #5 Sumas Mountain AM, Abbotsford – 1 Minute Interval Starts
We are keeping our series final course under wraps for now. But I assure you it’s going to be a lot of fun. The start will be near the top of Sumas and finishing up at the bottom parking lot. We have again listened to the rider feedback from last year as well. Riders will now be sent off in 1 minute intervals. Trail congestion should not be an issue on this fast and flowy course. Finishing times should be near the 18 minute mark.

Dave Mackie's photos from the Sumas Super-D last year really pop. He set up at the top of the course's main climb, which led straight into this rock-and-root-shoot just to catch the wayward Aussie. Photo ~ Dave Mackie
I look forward to another year of racing. From the course design to the draw prizes, this is a race series that makes me want to race. Who knows, you may actually see me line up at the start of one or two of them.
Till then, keep pedaling.
Matt Scott – FVMBA Race Director
With a successful 2011 season under their belt, FVMBA's Spring AM Series is a well-oiled machine. Race one or race them all, this is a great way to get to know some singletrack outside your usual routes. What's your One Bike to Rule Them All? *Hint: last year, it was a Tallboy*

Stoked for this series again this year.
I guess I need to buy an adjustable seatpost!
You'll wonder how you ever lived without one!
they're only for some people though...
not for everyone...
There's some tech downhill stuff in the XC races in this series that I would not want to be without one. But then again I am a mere mortal :P
The Super D races usually feature at least one flat section where you will want to be able to pedal your ass off too.
If you pre register at http://www.ccnbikes.combefore Feb 19 you can do all 5 races for $30. After that it's $10 each race.
too bad you didn't keep on with the 2 week gap between races (ie there's only 1 week between #1 and 2) - first is good for me, the remaining 4 are on kid weekends. oh well.
Bring the childrens along! There is always more room for vollies!
tri-cities carpool??

And because some of us at FVMBA also race, we wanted to have the Spring Series wrapped up so we can also focus on a bit of training and racing this summer as well.

If Dave races make sure he gets a suspension post;)

If anyone hasn't seen it on the front page, we've got an article with fresh photos and details on all five courses HERE.
Sounds like so much fun. I'm in! King of Fasia--Re: suspension post. Can be had...in fact it is the added bonus of the Reverb! I get sweet adjustability, with the added bonus of about 3/4 inch of supple air suspension. My knees love it!
As a novice racer I look forward to race # 2,3, and 5. Adjustable seatpost....check! Riding in the Valley is awesome. If I'm in the "need for speed/dirt" and if Whistler or Squampton are not viable I head south of PortMann bridge. The " South Shore".
Hey RWC, if your already planning on coming out to racing Bear, Vedder and Sumas, you might just want to pre register before Feb 19th and race them all. It will cost the same. And this way you will be entered into Kintec's Race Every Race category. And possible the One Bike to Rule them All if you are doing the whole series on the same bike.
The beauty of the One Bike to Rule them All category is that at the end of the series, all the prizes are awarded as draw prizes to who ever competed in this category. Suspensionwerx is supplying several suspension/shock services and Supsension Therapy has donated in a few set-up consultations as well.
Also all the sponsoring shop donated prizes are draw prizes at each race. So you don't have to finish on the podium to win. You just have to come out, ride great trails and be entered at a chance to win some swag.
So consider the XC races as a big social ride with a bunch of like minded people who are going to enjoy the trails and have a BBQ and some pops afterwards.

If you guys could just push all the dates back a couple months so this doesn't overlap with ski season I'd love to do the events.
wah wah wah!!!!!
Ski Saturday, Race Sunday! Problem solved.
Well i signed up but unfortunitly for me i havent ridden any of the listed trails, im not competing to win but i dont wanna charge blindly and get written off, i want to do the one bike for all class (Spitfire) what should i pre scout, bear and vedder?
registered for all 5, seriously debating doing all the races on my stylus. Bear on a hardtail ftw.
FVMBA trail gnomes are hard at work on the first race course of the season...Heritage Park.
Anybody remember the bike-swallowing mud pit of death last year at the intersection of Corrie's Corners and Gondola?

Nice work boys! Looking good. :woot:
Is it a good idea to ride the course before, or would I be ok just going to the race the day-of? I'm asking because I've never done an xc/am race before.
If you've ridden at Bear, Vedder or Red before, then you've likely ridden some of trails that will be used as the race course. Heritage park might be one you will want to pre ride.
We will have maps out for Heritage Park and Bear starting this week.
Here's our official Course Map for Heritage Park. Use in cojuction with the hand drawn map for pre ride refference.
FVMBA is proud to be partnering with Wentings (www.wentings.com) for the second year in a row for this course. Either for road or mountian, Wentings has always supported every aspect of cycling at the grassroots level. Dedicated shops like Wentings are the type of local shops that invest a lot of time, money and support to keep cycling & racing going in their community. If you're out pre riding next week or after the race on Feb 26th, stop in to say hi to Bruce, Bart & the guys and see what they have on the shop floor. Trek, Scott, Devinci, Brodie, BMC and Colnaglo are all represented.
Feb 26th - Race #1 Heritage Park XC, Mission - Mass Start
Registration is from 8am to 9:45am. Racing promply starts at 10am!
Heritage Park was chosen first and foremost because of the abundance of technical single track that’s in that area. Apart from a .5km gravel pathway that will be used to separate the racers, this 12km race course is pretty much made up entirely of single track. It’s a figure eight loop that uses a portion of the same climb for both laps but different descents will bring you back to the start/finish area. The trails are continuously moving, up and down. Course markings were tampered with last year. To avoid confusion and improper signage pointing riders in the wrong direction, the race course wont be officially marked till the day before the race.
For pre ride refference, print off the hand drawn map. Offical route is: Out and back on gravel path, then into Salamander. Right onto Glenn's loop and left up to Gondola at the "Y" intersection. After you climb Gondola for the first lap, take a right down Jacobs Ladder and follow this windy single track descent till you reach Salamander again. This time you will head back along Salamander to the start finish area. For your second lap, you will begin your ascent back up passed the "jumps" to Gondola from the bottom. At the top you will finish off your second lap with a rip down Cory's Corners and a quick dash along Salamander again in to the Finish Line.

Registered for all five.
Great series to shake the cobwebs off and have the opportunity to ride some very solid networks of trails. Looking forward to it!
Theres no better training than racing. FVMBA's All Mountain Spring Series will have various course times ranging between 15min to 1hr 10min, depending on the discipline. A perfect way to push yourself, to find your limits either going up or down the mountain and to experience the excitement and thrills that comes with racing. FVMBA's Spring Series will be the perfect training tool to prep yourself for the longer races that are coming up this season.
One of those races that might and should be on your race calendar is the NIMBY FIFTY, happening on May 26th in Pemberton. I'm pleased to announce that FVMBA will be partnering with the NIMBY FIFTY this year.
Everyone who pre registers for the FVMBA Spring Series http://reg.ccnbikes.com/index.php/ev...-spring-series will be entered into a draw for one of two entries into this years NIMBY FIFTY.

Registration for Bear will be from 8am to 9am. The start times will be assigned in the order that riders do package pick up. Riders will start in one min. intervals. Closing registration at 9am will give riders 1hr to make it up to the start. Someone with a slow walk / ride pace will only take about 40mins. The gate on Saunders will be closed, so a push up the Bear DH course and then a short pedal up the logging road to Sorcerer's Apprenctise is nessesary.
All pre-registered for all 5. Weeeee! Not sure how to feel about my first XC race, but I am really looking forward to the Super Ds.
I was concerned about pre riding until the weather forecast changed... again.... and will probably change again 4 times before saturday.... if it's a slop fest it won't matter a lot so i'll just go with it... but maybe pre-riding saturday if anyone wants to join
As it stands today...bring whatever tire gives you the best climbing traction. You're going to need it.
I wanted to pre-reg for all 5 but can't commit due to child care. I am stoked to give the xc race a shot on Feb 26th.
Pre Reg is closing in a little over 2 hours. If your sitting on the fence, nows your chance.
And remember we have 2 entries into the Bear Mountain Challenge (DH or XC) and 2 entries for the NIMBY FIFTY. Along with great service packages & swag from Suspensionwerx, Suspension Therapy and Kintec and Marx Conditioning for everyone who competes in Kintec's Race Every Race category and the One Bike to Rule them All category.
Pre Registration is now closed. Thanks to everyone who showed your support and registered early for FVMBA's All Mountain Spring Series. We've made the draws for the two entries we had for this years NIMBY FIFTY. Once we hear back from those people, we will announce the winners.
And if you Liked NIMBY's facebook page from Feb 15th to Feb 19th, you were put into a draw for two entries into FVMBA's Spring Series. This draw has also been made and we are just waiting to hear back from those people before announcing the winners.
If you haven't signed up yet, day of registration for Sunday Feb 26th Heritage Park race opens at 8am and closes at 9:30am. Racing will start promptly at 10am.
The 126 rider cap is half way to being sold out for Heritage Park. So if you plan on racing, make sure you show up early to ensure a spot on the start line.
You will need be a member of FVMBA (membership sold onsite) and have a current Cycling BC license (UCI/Citizen/Club Affiliate). Cycling BC will not be sold on site.
Reg'd for all 5 races and so far work isn't going to make me miss any...yet.:rocker:
Weatherman can't make up his mind though. Rain, wait, sun, wait snow, wait mixed-bag. Trail fairies have been in full force so the track is going to be as good as it gets no matter the weather. Super pumped for Sunday. Who else is coming out?
not being negative, but i'm preparing for a slop fest
that way if it's not that way i can be pleasantly surprised
I will either be racing for a solid mid-pack finish or riding sweep.
I got some new shoes with wicked toe spikes...they'll come in handy this race that's for sure ;)

Sunny skies, pouring rain, snow, slop, monster truck size mud pits..... we'll still be racing on Sunday. So come prepared for what ever the weather man gives us. It's going to be fun regardless of the weather. Besides, it's Febuary and you'll be racing. Who else can say that?
Registration is from 8am to 9:45am. Racing starts at 10am!

We have a trail crew going in tomorrow to do a little more course prep and drainage work. The Fraser Valley, like most places, has been getting a lot of rain the past week. And there is a slim possibility of snow on Sunday. So remember to come prepared for the weather.
On a much brighter note, I want to say thanks to everyone who pre registered for the FVMBA All Mountain Spring Series. As mentioned last week, FVMBA had partnered with the NIMBY FIFTY this year to bring racing to the people. Everyone who had registered for the NIMBY between Feb 15th and Feb 19th was put in a draw for one of two entries into FVMBA's Spring Series. And everyone who pre registered for the FVMBA Spring Series was put into a draw for one of two entries for the NIMBY FIFTY.
The winners of entry into FVMBA's All Mountain Spring Series are Ivana Horacek and Taylor Parsons. Congratulations and see you this Sunday at Heritage Park.
And the two lucky winners who will need to use the FVMBA Spring Series as training for the NIMBY FIFTY are Andrew Fisher and Kevin Feather.
Congratulations guys and thanks for supporting FVMBA and the NIMBY FIFTY.
And to those who missed out on free entry into a race, Bear Mountain Challenge also partnered with FVMBA and will be giving away two entries to either thier DH or XC race thats set to go off on June 30th - July 1st http://www.bearmountainchallenge.com/
You'll have to come out and race the Spring Series to have a chance at winning.
Registration for Heritage Park on Sunday is from 8am to 9:45am. Racing is at 10am sharp! Our awards and bbq after the race will be out from under the rain in a large covered gazebo. Make sure to have some dry clothes and stick around for the bbq and some great draw prizes.
one down 4 to go, anyone got the complete results?

That was such a great race today, so unbelievably slick and exciting :). I pre-rode the Bear Super-D course, and if the weather doesn't dry out between now and then, it's going to be really slick too.

Had I known you were heading over to Bear I would have joined you. I'm quite looking forward to next week-ends race.
didn't throw up or pass out. so did some skids instead.
anybody who changes their bike at all for the next one is a sissy.
Glad that I made it out. A challenging course - especially with the mud on full display. Very fun....Can't wait for next Sunday!
There is currently an inch or two at the top of Sunday's Bear Super D course...should be interesting! There's a course map up on FVMBA.com and a write up with results from race #1 will be up soon.
The weather was cold, the trails were muddy, and the sky was threatening to snow, but that’s what riding in February in the Fraser Valley is all about. If anything, the tough conditions made a great race course even more fun. Certainly the Mudbunnies were happy!

The FVMBA is synonymous in the Fraser Valley with trail advocacy and trail building. Our builders were out in full force this past week to ensure the trails were in the best shape possible given the past few weeks of rain.

Pinkbike.com and Avenue Body Shop teamed up with Wenting Cycles to present the FVMBA All Mountain Spring Series at Heritage Park today. This technical XC race attracted a diverse All Mountain group.

Out of the 63 riders who took part, we saw every type of racers. From Jean Ann Berkenpas - who competed in Europe this past year alongside Cathern Pendral on the Women’s World Cup Circuit, Mike Rauch – Wenting Cycle’s very own Phoenix Velo Road Champion for the past three years running, the spectrum core riders and even a group of DH dudes. Wylie Easton, Chris & Connor Tennant joked on the start line about where to wait for the Shuttle. One of them was even borrowed his dad’s XC bike for the race.

While the race might have been competitive at the front of the pack, there was definitely a strong vibe of getting out for some low key, grass roots fun!

A special thanks to Avenue Body Shop for sponsoring over $275 for our Podium Cash for each race in the series!

Avenue Body Shop also sponsored Crash Cash. $50 going to the best or worst crash. It came down to two possible winners. But in the end the Crash Cash went to Steve Uruski. He broke his chain halfway through the first lap and decided to complete the rest of the race chainless. Steve managed to finish 26th out of 63 racers.

Honourable mention goes to Local Ride guy who broke his carbon post on his second lap and still rode it out to the finish.

Thanks to all the racers who made this a huge success; don’t forget to wash your bikes before Sunday’s Super D at Bear Mountain in Mission! Registration will only be open from 8am to 9am. This will give one hour to push up the Bear DH course and make your way to the start line. As always, the race will start promptly at 10am.
You will be assigned a start time when you pick up your plate. And judging by the recent snow line, starting order will definately play into a good finishing time.

Check FVMBA.com soon for full race results and link to more photos.

Sorry guys. I'm dealing with a bit of a family emergency and have been full time at pediatrics this week. I was able to pass the paper work off just yesterday to another FVMBA Exec. We should have full results out soon but bare with us. Thanks for understanding.
BEAR SPRING SERIES RACE POSTPONED
There's a foot of snow on top of Bear right now, so we've had to reluctantly re-schedule.
The race will now be held next weekend March 11th.
Stupid snow!

Well, Mother Nature dropped a little 30cm present on top of Bear last week that forced us to delay the Bear Mnt Super D.
After the rains we had the past two days and some plus 17C temps forecasted for Thurday, Im pleased to say its time to get back to racing.
Our venue sponsor, Velocity Cycles in Langley, will be hooking up with Transition Bikes for the Bear Super D. There will be loads of swag to be given out. And word has it that Transition might have a few of their guys up racing on their new 29ers.
Avenue Body Shop will again have their $50 Crash Cash for the worst wreck or best broken part. They will also have Podium Cash up for grabs too. Paying out 5 deep with cash: 1-$25, 2-$20, 3-$15, 4-$10, 5-$5.
Day of entry fee is $10 for those who didn't pre register. You will need to be a FVMBA member to race and have a Cycling BC license (UCI/Citizen/Club). FVMBA membership will be sold on site, Cycling BC will not.
Registration will be open at 8am and closing at 9am. Riders will have an hour to hike/push up the DH course to get to the Start line. The gate on Saunders will not be opened and there wont be any shuttles provided. At a leisurely pace, it only takes about 40 mins to get to the start line from the bottom. The race starts at 10am sharp! Riders will be given their start times in the order they register. So come early to get a good start time and the best possible course conditions.

With the amount of rain and melting snow we have had this spring, you can expect the typical muddy spring course conditions. Eugene, FVMBA's very own one man trail building machine, has been out this week making sure drainage is being dug and some new bridges will be inplace intime for Sundays race. Dress appropriately for the weather. Possible wet weather. It can still get cold out here in the Valley.
Results from Heritage Park are finished and should be up on http://www.fvmba.com/ very shortly.
Hey Matt, as much as I would have liked to finish third, I am, last time checked, a boy. Plate 46, Noah Wilcox.
Thanks, see you Sunday.
There were a few errors with the results for Heritage Park. They will be resolved in the next day or two. They don't give me access to edit the web, which probable is a good thing. We will have all the reg and timing bugs worked before the next race and for the rest of series.

CCN is running a series of articles for their front page that they're calling "Behind the Scense". http://www.ccnbikes.com/index.php/ne...e-scenes-fvmba
They are caught up with FVMBA's president Kevin Koopmans for a little Q&A on our series and what it takes to put Grassroot racing events.
Tomorrows registration is from 8am to 9am. First rider goes at 10am sharp.
Dont forget to spring ahead tonight one hour for daylight savings!
As always, you will need a Cycling BC license (UCI/Citezen/Club Affiliate) - which wont be sold on site, and you need to have a FVMBA membership - will be sold on site.
Riders will be assigned a start time as they register. The earlier you register, the earlier you race, the better the course condition you will get. If you miss your start time for some reason, your start time will be pushed to the bottom of the list. So make sure to be on time for your start.
It has been raining all day out here in the Valley and most likely will be tomorrow as well. Bring dry, warm cloths for post race BBQ and awards.
Are there any shuttles provided? Or is it push up to ride?

Mother Nature gave us 30cms of snow last week, forcing us to postpone our March 4th Bear Super D to this weekend.

The white snuff on the ground melted away with the nearly 100cm of rain the Fraser Valley saw this past week. Our FVMBA trail crews were up all week making sure there was enough drainage was cut and bridges in place to help deal with melt and ground saturation.
The conditions weren’t perfect. But anyone who incorporates biking into their weekly regiment to maintain sanity, knows how to cope with the sometimes cold, wet and ugly.

With snow threatening at the Start Line, a small bonfire was used to keep the 64 racers warm while they waited to be sent off in 1 min intervals. One by one, they raced down through the high canopy single track of Sorcerer’s Apprentice, onto a short road traverse that lead them to the famed Bear DH course.

Check FVMBA.com for overall series points and details on next weeks Vedder Race.
Hahaha, good times today. I wiped out, and I wasn't even on my bike. I was running at the end of Sorcerer's and slipped and then couldn't get up, I just kept falling over. Totally hilarious conditions.
The mini bonfire at the start line was awesome! Excited for Vedder next weekend :)
Lets keep the Super D momentum going!
March 18th – Race #3 Vedder Super D, Chilliwack – 1 Minute Interval Starts
Registration opens at 8am to 9am. Race starts at 10am sharp!
Riders can shuttle up the mountian. We will be runnig this race rain, shine and even with a reasonable amount of snow.
Vedder Mountain has a lot of trails that suit the bigger bikes. With its steeps and some occasional gap jumps, it was a natural fit for a Super D. We listened to rider feedback from last year and have removed the 1.5k traverse off the start. We will be using the original course from last year but the start line will be moved down the mountain towards 2 Cents. Start is 100m up from 2 Cents. You race into 2 Cents, down Skidder, across the road and finishing out off of Dilemma. This race will be one for the big bike rider to take some points in the Overall Series.
SRAM and Pinkbike will have swag galour to give out. Avenue Body Shop will be taking care of Podium Cash and Crash Cash. Bear Super D didn't have any real wrecks or impressive crashes, so for Vedder, Avenue's will have 2 - $50 Crash Cash prizes up for grabs.
You need Cycling BC licensse (not sold on site) and an FVMBA membership (sold on site). Entry Fee $10.
http://bb.nsmb.com/picture.php?album...pictureid=1805
Remember we have the One Bike to Rule them All category and Kintec's Race Every Race category. There will be lots of prizes to be given out to those racers who participate in our entire series. So if you have race every race so far but haven't placed on the poduim, you can still win some impressive prizes at the end of the series if you keep coming out to every race. We are down to 4 women out of 12, 3 juniors out of 4 and 30 men out of 72 who are all eligable. Through attrition, you can win by just coming and having a great time.
People who enter "one-bike" and change their tires are cheaters.
any helmet cams of the course? Going to have to ride it blind again.
Just uploaded the video. Check out the FVMBA site. The Bunnies went out for a "killing". Three podiums out of five is really impressive! Oh and Arthur "schooled" everyone again! Coming down the last hill, he seem to still have lots in the "tank"! Is this guy unbeatable or what? 29errrrr!
http://www.fvmba.com/2012/03/12/bear...lts/#more-1981
For those who rode the course last year there is one change to beware of on 2 cents. About half way there is a gap jump/roller that wasn't there last year. At full speed you can gap it at slow speed you can roll it and at medium speed your in for a hard landing. The trail crew was out last weekend flagging some of the features so keep your eye's open for that.

I'll drive up on Friday morning. 4" or less of the white stuff, we'll race. Anymore and we push back one week. I'll need to see what it's like Friday morning before I make that call.
To race or not to race?
Drove up this afternoon, no snow @ the top of dilemma and minimal @ skidder
The race is still on!
Now I just have to decide which bike to ride. V10C or Nomad C? Hmmmm...
Pre lapping tomorrow.
Sorry, was working OT nightshift last night so I couldn't update.
Yes, the race is still on!! Providing we don't get a foot of snow today.
I drove up Vedder mid day and snow line is just below Skidder. It was snowing at the start of 2 Cents but barely any accumulation on the trail.

It will be cold and wet. But if you've been to any of the races so far, you'll know thers's more to these races then the racing. Its about getting out, having a good time and winning swag in draw prizes. FVMBA is putting on a great event but we don't take ourselves too seriously. Riding in the snow isn't above us. And Im sure it isn't above a lot of you either.
See you tomorrow for some great racing, bbq and prizes!

Our other Spring Series title sponsor, Abbotsford's Avenue Body Shop will have 2 - $50 Crash Cash prizes and $300 in Podium Cash going 5 deep. A total of $400 cash will be awarded tomorrow.
It was dry and dusty today!
Oh wait no, it's going to be rowdy tomorrow. Hopefully I don't puke on my race run after tonight's St Patty's day festivities.
See you guys there for some fun racing action tomorrow.
I have never ridden out there before, how long is the pedal up? I want to go early and get a lap in before race time.
Give yourself 1:30 round trip and you should have plenty of time.
Pre riding the course is strongly recommended. There are jumps and drops that are best seen before leaping.

If you want a prelap, I suggest a shuttle, or show up at like 8am, to cover your ride up, down, and up again
Yep, plan to come out at 8:00. See everyone there.
anyone planning a pre-race shuttle? hoping to bum at least one lap since I'm coming out in a car. vitamin "b" is on offer.
Hey Graham, expect a 30 min casual pedal up on a small bike.
But as stated for anyone who hasn't ridden Vedder or ridden Vedder in a while, try to fit in an early practice lap. 2 Cents has a questionably placed double mid course that is great at speed or roll through at low speed but will catch you and your collar bone off gaurd at moderate speed. Theres a huck mid Dilemma that will be open but has a ride around if your not up for it. The Chute at the end of Dilemma can get a bit knarly too.
Just a reminder for everyone that is shuttling. The road past the start to Dilemma will be closed to traffic at 10am. Racer will be crossing the road. Make sure you are at the start before then if you plan on shuttling.
Ride safe, see everyone in the morning.
god, i feel like i haven't ridden vedder in forever :( good luck to all of you that are racing! rubber side down
Well the day started out ugly.
It was snowing as I left Abby to volunteer and cold when I got to Vedder.
Approx. 40 riders at 8:30 blossomed into 63 racers by nine am the end of signup.
The weather cleared and riders ripped.
The marshall position I was at, seen one women hit up the faster skinny option and 10men.
One of them bit it twice, really twice on the one race run.
At the awards ceremony ,he qualified for one of two $50 cash crash prizes,it definitely helped .
Lots of swag was given out and the burgers(even veggie)with smokies ,really were tasty.
53 men and 10 women everyone was smiling, you just gotta love that.
Stats will be soon up, big thanks to Matt and the crew for putting on a great series.
After the racing was over ,some helped carry 20ft beams into where needed, and others rode and rode.
All good stuff.
Gary
awesome race today. The weather turned out great, the course was super fun. So pooped after had to stop at porteau cove for a nap on the way back, I can't wait till my gig in squamish is done
I woke up this morning to wet snow heavily coming down in Abbotsford. Luckly, as I drove closer to Vedder, the better the day was starting to look. As Harv Bergen, owner of Lifecyles had cheerfully put - "I think there might be some sun coming threw".
The start line seemed to be under a mini blizzard at times, the weather didn't dampen spirits of the 63 hardy souls that came out to enjoy some sweet FVMBA Spring Series Racing!

You'll hit Crazy 8's at the top. This trail is old school technical single track. High canapy, tight loamy fun with sections rocks and roots. Kinda like how the shore used to be before bikes got lots of suspension and guys realized they can huck things. If you are a strong technical rider, you should do well on Crazy 8's.
Crazy 8's basicly does a loop at the top of the mountain. You'll hit the fire road again , which loops you back around again, this time sending riders into Big Red / Better Red and Momentum. These trails are wide open, big ring, downhill, single track trails. One can hit 40-45km/h in some sections. They will take you to the finish line at the bottom.
The race is around 14km. Should take the average guy/gal around an hour to complete.
Check out a couple of new installments in the FVMBA website. It features a top to bottom race run on Vedder by Gord and part 1 of "racer profile" featuring Jaclyn D. (a Muddbunny!) with video. Enjoy!
Next stop, RED!

The snows all gone and I am heading out this afternoon to mark the course. As long as nothing gets tampered with, the course will be clearly marked for everyone thats coming out to pre-ride on Saturday.
If you're out there right now riding the course, I hope you've got your swim fins and snorkle!!
Yeah with all this rain it's starting to look like last years Red Mountain Challenge all over again.
Going skiing Saturday so I'm riding course blind. Hope the rain let's up a bit for race day!

Any details on the Red Mtn course (distance, time estimate, etc...)? How does it compare to Heritage? Thanks.

Hopefully there won't be quite as much mud as at Heritage.

We will still be racing. Rain or Snow. So dress accordingly. You don't have to worry about getting too dirty. There are several drive through bike washes strategically placed through out the race course. Red Mnt has a lot of hard pack and rock so the mud was actually not as bad as I had expected.
Racing on April 1st is not going to be an April Fools day joke. But we do have something special for you in the way of how the start will be ;)
Still racing in the snow today. It will be a short lap. Short on distance but lots of swag!
I was happy when I woke up and didn't hear any rain.
I woke up to snow at my house this morning and it's still comin' down. I imagine there must be lots of snow there too! Have a fun snowy race!
Well it snowed hard as we drove out from Abby this morning, but racers began arriving and never stopped.
Over 50 + racers ,raced off to a Leman's start.
Led out by the always fast Bart Brown, apparently even without his bike.
A shortened course where technical skilled riders looked good.
Lots of swag , and hungry racers eating up those burgers and smokies.
The sun came out and the snow started to melt fast.
FVMBA race series continues, with what is looking to be a smiling hard core crowd .

Sumas FVMBA race in two weeks is going to be epic.

Today's race was awesome. Definitely the hardest race of the series so far. I would have liked a third lap, passing opportunities were slim.
The fight for Hardtail supremacy reached epic levels today though. :)
i nearly killed a man by dislodging a rock in a steep bit. good fun.
Now you know why it's more fun on top.....
Mattman deserves full marks, the Leman's start added to the fun.

Crazy weather and good times!

56 showed up!
Collin... I didn't see you there.
Something about races at that venue that seem to affect you. I seem to recall you hiding out in the camper at Bear last year.

Did some recon on the Sumas race course today. Still snow on Noah Fear but the rest of the mountain is clear.
NoahFear logs down cut out.
Entry has had further meshing for traction and safety.
The EmmaPeel is done, the new exit bridge completed today and the rest of the reroute buffed.
Seen a number or riders coming through, all smiles.
Lots of snow if you try going up higher.
The race route if your riding it tomorrow should be fun.
Exiting down EPeel ,what a view, wavy gravy and flow.
Looking forward to the final toonie race of fvmba series next sunday.
Remember those riders who are not fvmba members ,signup and support all the great things happening out there.
Like trail fairies, it's not magic.
support.

Snows almost all gone on Noah Fear. Kerry and Gary have done a phenomenal job on reclaiming Emma Peel after being mowed down by clear cut. Sumas is in great shape right now. This is going to be a great race! Reg is from 8-9am, racing is at 10am.
Check out the short video teaser that could unfold on Sunday. It's gonna be epic!!!
Part 2 of the racer profile article was also posted.

Do you guys think there's time to do a practice lap and then pedal back for the start?
Great race series by the way!
Depending on how strong of a pedaler you are, up and down for the race route can be done in about 1hr to 1hr 15mins.
So to answer your question, yes. But reg is only open from 8am to 9am. So you will have to figure out how early you want to show up to get your practice lap in and be able to get back to the top for you start time.
Going to be a great race tomorrow. Rode the course today and the trails were in good shape and it should be even better tomorrow if the sun come's out for the afternoon.
Absolutely amazing series overall. Thanks to everyone involved in making it happen; it's really raised the bar on what a community event should be like.
Thanks also to everyone who raced, you are all super cool.
^ ditto
I'm sad I missed the Sumas race, but I was waking up from a bachelor party as the first racers were dropping in. Definitely an awesome and chill series, thanks FVMBA!
Wow what a great course! Big thanks to Matt Scott (and his wife) for all the work he has put into making this series what it is. Super competitive for the high level guys, and still fun for everybody. Smiles all around and tons of swag given away.
I will also ditto what Biggles said about everybody who has raced the series. See you again next spring!
Our Spring Series saw 296 racers take to the startling. Guys had travel from as far away as Vernon, Kelowna, Pemberton, Bellingham and Snoqualmie WA. to race. And every type of racer had showed. Two had represented Canada at World Cups in Europe, a few more have dominated Canada Cups for XC and DH and all the way down to the guys that try to demoralize there buddies on the weekend.
A big thanks to our Spring Series Sponsors: Pinkbike.com, Avenue Bodyshop, Kintec, SRAM, Suspensionwerx, Suspension Therapy, Marx Conditioning, Wentings, Lifecyles, Cranky's, Velocity, Pedal Sport and Bear Mountain Challenge. Without their support for Grass Roots racing our series would have never happened. Support those who are supporting FVMBA.
Like us on Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/#!/fvmba to see all the photos from Sumas and the rest of the series. Some shots for lower course are up and mid mountain and startline should be up in the next day or two.

We had a slight error with our Excel sheet in calculating all the Overall Series points. The podium has been changed from what was presented at Sumas. Everything has now been sorted out.

I just want to say thanks to everyone who came out to support FVMBA. You guys had such a positive attitude and apperciation for the efforts FVMBA has been doing with both our Spring Series and Trail Work & Advocacy. We are 100% volunteer run and its this type of feed back keeps us at FVMBA doing what we love to do.
Great race on Sunday and a great series overall. Thanks to all the volunteers and all the effort to put together the races. For me this was the first time riding in most of these areas. I will be back to ride many of these areas again now that I have seen what the Fraser Valley has to offer. Big ups to all the sponsors as well as the prizing and swag was top notch. Can't wait for next years series ;)
wow Arthur must have really crushed himself. Running all that flat crap was annoying.. Noah Fear was OK though, and the last bit was pretty fun.
Moral: don't bother pre-riding, you'll just break shit.
