GT Bicycles and Atherton Racing Join Forces
Bethel, CT – January 10, 2012 – GT Bicycles is proud to announce its partnership with Atherton Racing. Beginning in 2012, the mountain bike race team of Dan, Gee, and Rachel Atherton, will join non-family GT rider Marc Beaumont and form the new team GT Factory Racing.

“Atherton Racing is one of the most progressive teams in the history of mountain biking, and is known for taking the sport to the next level,” said Mark Peterman, Global General Manager GT Bicycles.  “We’re excited about the partnership because it both continues GT’s legacy as the brand that helps progressive riders push their limits, and because of the opportunities it presents to develop new products.”

Over the past five years, Atherton Racing has seen over 50 professional victories and multiple World titles. For the first time, the Atherton team will also include a non-family member with GT rider Marc Beaumont. As a consistent World Cup downhill rider with podiums in some of the world’s greatest Enduro races, Beaumont will complement Gee on the UCI DH circuit, and Dan on the Euduro circuit, as his focus has shifted towards Enduro-style events. The team will be riding the GT Fury, Sanction, and Force Carbon and Alloy.

In addition to racing, the team will provide important product testing feedback and work hand-in-hand with GT on future product advancements and the next evolution of GT mountain bikes.

“The new relationship that’s formed between Atherton Racing and GT has opened up so many opportunities for everyone involved, I’m stoked to be going into the next few years of racing being bolstered by a company with such a passion for the sport, and with a company that’s drive for the top step of the podium, matches that of my own,” said Gee Atherton.

Underwhelming combination to me. Not sure why they choose GT? Maybe some new bike designs are in the works? The money must have been good.

as far as i've seen the fury is proving to be a bomber chassis. have you heard of any issues?

thats odd i heard the exact opposite..

the Fury keeps staying as a Protoype cuz it isnt ready for prime time (how many years has that frameset been in the prototype phase now ??)...

but who knows, i guess we'll see when Gee launchs one of those massive senders..

^ I'm pretty sure it's available, just no one wants it.

There were a bunch of Sportchek guys riding them at some of the BC Cups, i can't see that they were 'prototypes'.

Will Mark B have to change his name now, a la Ramones?

So, GT is part of Dorel Industries out of Quebec (along with Cannondale, Schwinn, Mongoose, IronHorse, SUGOI, Pacific, Dyno, RoadMaster, PowerLite and InSTEP brand names), which had a market capitalization of $821,650,000 at market close yesterday. So the money shouldn't be a huge issue, GT has some pretty good backing. Dorel is likely trying to boost up the brand and move bikes by making them cool through this sponsorship.

i know in the past that was always the problem

GT kept saying the bike was ready, but you could never get one.. then later they would say it was back in "prototype" phase..

has anyone actualy seen one in a LBS for sale ??

the alloy versions are new to me, i didnt know they had any intention of making a non-carbon version of the Fury.

The only time I've seen one (or two...) was a matching 'his and hers' in the Whistler line up. She was wearing training shoes, very short tight shorts (hmmm...) and a vest, and IIIRC he was looking ready for a tennis match. Maybe this is the image GT are trying to get away from?!
