Specialized for 2012

Specialized is making a few brand new bikes this year. Notable for those of us who like to get rad is the Status – a lower line gravity bike that is closer to the Demo in geometry and attitude than the Big Hits were. For those who like to pedal for their radness the new Stumpjumper Evo carbon is a light but aggressive bike designed to rail the downhills. Specialized also has a new pedal that is close to the end of its development cycles and a trick new carbon DH helmet at a reasonable price.

The 2012 Demo, with ample laurels to rest on, stands pat for 2012. Even the graphics are remarkably similar in this version. A splash of black at the headtube and on the swingarm distinguish it from the 2011. You’ll also find a Cane Creek Double Barrel shock in the rear and a custom painted Boxxer RC up front.

The Demo will be spec’ed with the new SRAM XO DH group.

The Enduro Evo isn’t new this year but the spec is now. It still won’t be available in an carbon frame but it expands to two models – Enduro Evo FSR and the Enduro Evo FSR Expert. Both are coil sprung and the lower model (shown) comes with X Fusion suspension while the Expert bounces on Fox Shox. The Enduro bikes all have 142mm rear ends for 2012.

X Fusion appears to be making inroads in original equipment spec.

This is a size small version of the 26″ wheel Stumpjumper Evo. This bike is all new for 2012 and it’s the first Evo version in carbon. There are two models – the Expert you see above and the Comp which isn’t quite as gucci.

The Expert version also rolls out a 29″ version for 2012. I know that some of you are scratching your heads right now while others are salivating on your keyboards.

The Specialized Dissident helmet is aiming at the top. According to Specialized it works with all the neck braces currently on the market. It has an EMT removal system that inflates to push the helmet safely off your head in the event of an accident.

The Dissident helmet even has pockets for earbuds if you like to ride with your music playing. The liner is removable and washable and the D rings are titanium to save weight. It comes in four sizes and will likely be priced at US$350.

Specialized’s new platform for 2012–the Status. It’s low slung, slack and aimed at price conscious racer and bike park types. Stay tuned for video updates tomorrow night!

This is the new Specialized pedal. It’s not terribly light at 510 grams but it’s engineered to be strong, grippy and, according to Jason Chamberlain of Specialized, it’s the thinnest pedal with a full strength spindle there is. More info to come about this product as well. nsmb will have a pair of these shortly. Photo ~ Cam McRae.

If you are looking to have a Demo that doesn’t look like everybody else’s this might be the one for you. The aesthetics come from Troy Lee himself and there will only be 250 made. Apparently they will be available in the new year. Photo ~ Cam McRae.
