2010 Rock Shox Revelation Dual Air Motion Control

The Revelation was mounted for most of its life to a Santa Cruz Blur LT and to a SC Nomad for the pictures in this review. It replaced a 2009 Fox Talas 150mm for the duration of the test. Throughout 2010, the bike saw mainly trail-riding duties in the Vancouver to Pemberton area, with some cross-country races thrown into the mix on the week-ends. For the most part I have a hard time turning down a little added spice to my trail rides: the Revelation tagged along and was ridden through its fair share of 'not so dandy' terrain as a result.

Damping, chassis and other pre-ride notes
Out of the box the Revelation’s Motion Control is not the most intuitive damper to adjust.

Briefly, the Gate serves two purposes:
-    Functions as a high-speed compression adjuster
-    Dictates the range of adjustment of the low-speed compression adjuster.  The more “Gate” used, the closer to a lock-out the compression adjuster becomes at it is moved clockwise through its range.

Once this is assimilated the adjustments are easily made on the trail, thanks to the decently positive feeling adjusters located comfortably within reach on the right-side top cap of the fork.  Preference for a firmer feeling front end had me run the Gate 13 clicks clockwise (19 clicks total) and compression three clicks clockwise (six clicks total).

In this case, I found the air spring pressure recommendations to be on the low side, most notably when the fork was running smoothly. RockShox recommends about 120 psi in both the negative and positive chambers for a 180 pound rider. At 175 pounds, I ended up with 140 psi in both chambers to achieve the desired 21% sag. At this high pressure, the feel of the fork was not compromised and no ill effects appeared long-term.

The rebound adjuster on this particular fork has not swayed from its call of duty and has held on tight to the foot nut. Most RockShox forks I have seen have lost the red rebound adjuster knob not long after being mounted. I consider myself lucky with this fork and do recommend removing the knob and storing it in your pack. 

It seems like both RockShox and Fox are on top of their game and funky axle-to-crown heights are a thing of the past. The 140mm Revelation is not an exception to the rule and nicely complimented the geometry of the LT.

Weight was comparable to the 2009 Fox Talas 150 (15mm QR, 1 1/8th steerer), yet the Revelation’s chassis did have less give. 

The Maxle Light is simple to use and serves its function well. Reliability has been decent, as the assembly has required occasional cleaning not to seize.

Riding time
The Revelation is a hard fork to fault on the trail. Good small bump sensitivity, a controlled mid and end-stroke. No surprises here. RockShox has perfected the Motion Control damping and it does its job well in all encountered situations. In steeper terrain, where heavier impacts are common, the compression adjuster was easily used to add necessary support to the front end. Compliance is not greatly affected and this feature is appreciated given the variety of terrain encountered locally.

The Revelation’s compliance is a strong point: even with a firmer set-up, small bump sensitivity is not a concern. Small asperities are filtered and little feedback is passed on to the rider. The Revelation’s damping does not offer the same mid-stroke control as the Fox and as such I increased air pressure and damping over the duration of the test to compensate.

The chassis’ increased rigidity over the Fox was noticeable. At 175 pounds, this characteristic is not something I would pinpoint as a positive or negative trait of either the RockShox or Fox product.  Neither exhibited extremes in this department:  the greater give of the Fox did not force me to maintain a higher level of focus in demanding terrain, nor did the Revelation’s rigidity cause unwanted deflection or an excessive amount of feedback. Both forks had the necessary give to “dance” in rough terrain, one having more than the other. For heavier riders, or those demanding quite a bit more from their shorter-travel trail forks, this might become an issue. 

Encountered issue: 
The Dual Air spring assembly has needed constant adjustment. Positive and negative air spring pressures have to be reset at least weekly to bring the fork back to its stock height. The fork creeps down in its travel otherwise. The problem will occur less often if positive and negative air pressures are kept identical. Even if identical air pressures are used, both chambers will still have to be reset multiple times monthly. RockShox is aware of the issue, and changes have been made to 2011 Dual Air assemblies. I cannot confirm that the problem has been remedied in the next generation Dual Air. (But we'll know soon once the 2011 fork review gets in our hands - hopefully soon! - Ed.)

Overall
It is hard to ignore the Dual Air flaw of the 2010 generation of the Revelation. Yet with its excellent trail manners, affordable maintenance costs and a competitive MSRP of $879, the overall package value of the Revelation Dual Air MC is obvious.

I have one of the 2011 Revelations (Dual Air, Ti blackbox) and so far so good as far as the spring goes. That said, I'm a good boy and generally check pressure every ride.

I did notice that the foam ring on the air piston was essentially dry, although there was an ass-load of red rum on top of the piston. also soaked the foam rings in the main seals. There's not a lot of oil in the lowers (3-8ml [!!!!] recommended by SRAM,) so I figure It's worth pulling the thing apart to get it top notch.

great review arthur! nice to have a great rider and suspension tech break things down so thoroughly. i have an 07/08? coil revelation, even with a qr it is quite a bit stiffer than the fox fork it replaced. been thinking about replacing it with a new dual position air version, but i'm not keen to guinea pig a new feature - rs seems to like having its customers beta test their technology rather than focus on getting things right first try

pretty sure dual position is a new name for 2-step. so it's probably wise to avoid.

Same function but different system (2Step is solo air). Not that I have any trouble with my used 2Step Lyrik, and neither did the previous owner.

I have 2 RS forks, and both are quite reliable but both needed a bit of tweaking at beginning to get them running right

I've had the 2010 Revelation since last June, It is currently in for warranty for the 4th time. Which is a shame really, because when it is working it feels fantastic.

At first the problem was noticeable stanchion suck over the course of a regular weekend ride (I was loosing 20mm in the course of 4 hours) but my biggest problem is the seal:

It's done this 3 times to me. I really hope they can resolve the issue because as I already said, when the fork is working I think it feels amazing.

I have a 2010 revelation air U'turn. Sean at Tantalus in Squamish actually fixed the sinking problem for me. Not sure what he did, but I didn't loose a mm after that. I rode the crap out of it on too big a bike and very aggressive riding until I retired it to a lighter bike and stuck a 36 on the bigger bike. I could feel that it was being out ridden, but it took the abuse in stride and survived to live another day in spite of it.

Oh yeah - nice stockings Arthur.

Hey that's exactly like my fork! It hasn't creeped down at all but it feels more harsh than when I first got it. Maybe it's time for an overhaul.

same happened ('10 model) a couple of times to a friend of mine who manages one of the local bike shops, last time thankfully at the end of a ride. He also had a problem with the fork creeping down. I've a feeling it was something to do with one of the seals on the air cart leaking and pressurising the fork leg, but I'm no fork expert. Either way, RS sent him another cart and it hasn't happened since.

I too have 2010 Team Air U-turn. I recently replaced the wiper seals as the left hand side kept popping up. Turns out that same thing happened 2 rides after new seals were fitted! LBS rang RS - it turns out that the 2010 models have a faulty negative air cartridge - begins to leak air building up pressure in lower leg then popping seal out. Most noticible if you have negative air pressure set quite high (some people set neg pressure slightly higher than positive chamber as they thinks it give a more plush feeling) My forks are 18 months old but RS still warrant this fault so no charge for getting new air cartidge fitted. Just a pain in the arsethat they have to go out of town for this.

I had 2007 426 Revs and they have been bomb-proof, firstly on my hard tail then swapped over to my wifes Giant Anthem. Never had any problems with air cartridges or seals.

I love my Revs - super plush and super stiff. Definitely noticed a big difference since going to the maxle lite version. My only gripe is that the motion control damper only really seems to be effective when in the last 2 settings i.e 5 and 6 clicks down from full open. Otherwise I cannot detect an appreciable difference within the first 4 settings - no matter what floodgate settings I try. My favourite setting is floodgate 2 clicks clockwise from full open and compression set at 5 clicks, this seems to eleminate brake dive on very steep technical descents, otherwise try and keep compression at 4 clicks to maximise plushness.

I'm thinking about trying the new 150mm sektor coil fork to see what all the fuss about coils is about. Anyone had any experience c/- air forks?

Hmmmn. . . when I had my fork (Fox RC2) in for service at a shop that had reworked hundreds of front forks over the short riding season (Fanatykco in Whistler) the mechanic scolded me for running a zip-tie (to dial in sag) on the stanchion. He said it fucks up the seals, the fork is engineered for a specific amount of travel. I cut it off after that.
