Qualifying results are in and the top two spots are no surprise – but then you may need to raise an eyebrow. Every point counts now so you can bet riders where going hard – but Minnaar had troubles (“I went down like a home sick mole” was how he put it) and other riders like the new world champ and Mick Hannah didn’t fare as well as they would have liked I’m sure. Steve Smith, the only Canadian in the field of 208 riders, pulled in a respectable 15th. US riders Luke Strobel and Aaron Gwin were 10th and 12th respectively.

If you pore through the top 200 UCI DH rankings, right before the final round gets under way in Schladming, you’ll only find one man older than Steve Peat; Brian Lopes (38) who sits in 178th place. And yet Peaty goes into the final round in first place with 1,534 pts. How does he stay at the top of his game? How does he stay fired up? The man is a marvel.
But I erred earlier when I grabbed the UCI rankings rather than the World Cup points standings. Time to rectify that now.
Contrary to what I said earlier, Sam Hill actually leads the World Cup circuit with 1219 points (note – World Championship points do not count toward your World Cup points total). Anyone in the top four could win it but with a big lead on the the remaining field it looks like it will be Hill or Minnaar – and Hill certainly has the edge on this track based on previous results.
Last year’s results for the top six from Schladming are below followed by the final standings.
