Bikes For Tykes Returns
Make a kid smile!
Date: 2008-12-04
Obsession: Bikes ( 1st and Lonsdale ) is again running Bikes for Tykes. We take unwanted kids' bikes and fix them up to give to kids who can't afford a two-wheeled present. We do this as a Christmas initiative because this can be the toughest time on many families. Bikes are expensive and all kids should be given a chance to enjoy the freedom that they offer.
The program is in it's fourth year and in a typical season we have given out 60 refurbished bikes. To recreate this many bikes we require at least twice that number to work from. Children grow out of bikes quickly, and I know that many high quality bikes are just lingering around peoples' homes collecting dust. These bikes can create massive smiles and even change a childs path if recruited for our program.
This year we have a serious need this year already as we have had 40 formal requests for bikes and it is only December 3!
Bikes can simply be dropped off at our store which at the corner of First and Lonsdale ( formerly Dizzy Cycles ). Our hours are 10- 6 most days. On the the other side of this if anyone knows of a family in our community that requires good kids bikes please let us know.
The information we will need is:
Parent or caregivers name, contact number(s), best time to contact, agency that is supporting the family, child's age, and height and type of bike required (ie BMX, Mtn bike, road). Email works best for this.
In the past year we have distributed bikes through 6 organizations including: Family Services of the North Shore, Hollyburn Family Services, Salvation Army Chapel, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Our Community bikes.
I know that this program makes a difference so if you can, spread the word.
If you can help out in any way or if you have any testimonials or questions - send 'em here.
