On The Line

Not Just Whistler

Date: 2008-12-01

A tight-frame, muddy shot of goggle-covered eyes, a quick view of dust lingering over a steep berm, a bug’s-eye view of a dangerous drop - back in 2007, glimpses of mountain biking I caught on tape seemed like the perfect opportunity to showcase the world of Whistler mountain biking to a larger audience and share my love of riding. My friends and I realized we could pull together a longer, substantive film building on what random shots we had already filmed over the summer. Consequently, “Livin’ the Dream” was released in November 2007, featuring local riders from Whistler along with international mountain bikers in town to train – each with the same passion for the unique mixture of top-notch trails, a non-stop party atmosphere, and incredible backdrops that make Whistler the best place to live the riding lifestyle.

Clips from the film featuring Cody Eichhorn, Tristan Merrick, and Redbull Elevation quickly climbed in popularity to become Pinkbike Videos of the Day. Following the initial success of “Livin’ the Dream”, a shortened version was voted into the Top 25 Showcase at the Toronto Student Film Festival, and the film won the Festival’s prestigious award for Best Cinematography. Though it took a substantial effort to film, edit, and produce the film by myself, the success of “Livin’ the Dream” helped to build unprecedented interest in this year’s movie, “On the Line”.

“On the Line” aims to provide a view into some of the best riding on Canada’s West Coast from locals who live the riding lifestyle day in and day out. While “Livin’ the Dream” focused strictly on Whistler riding, “On the Line” not only brings the viewer better film of Whistler, but also offers clips from a range of British Columbia riding locations, including Pemberton, Squamish, Silverstar, and Sun Peaks. Also featured in “On the Line” is comprehensive coverage of the Crankworx Canadian Open, Giant Slalom, and Slopestyle, along with Whistler’s local race series, Phat Wednesdays.

Returning this year are some of last year’s favourite riders – Cody Eichhorn, Chris Dimbill, and Tristan Merrick – but “On the Line” also brings viewers a whole new flock of riders such as Kevin Bartowski, Rebecca McQueen, Chris Polley, Jack Reading, Smokey, and Matt Zdriluk.

After a memory-filled six months of riding, filming, and road tripping, shooting finally wrapped on November 22, 2008 with one of the most intense stunts ever attempted in mountain biking. The full-length film will be released in Spring 2009, available free online to bring viewers insight into the unique lifestyle experienced by many local Whistler riders.

Next year’s film is set to incorporate larger production plans that promise to be very different from anything we have attempted in the past. Stay tuned for more information and video as next season fast approaches.

I like the look of this teaser.  Anyone remember a snowboard movie where they did this?  Two guys jumped the train though - and they didn't show themselves to the engine.  Maybe it's on Youtube.  Looking forward to seeing the finished product of this one. What do  you think?  Does it need more big names to be legit?
